Birdville Nearly Doubles Division 1 Superior Ratings From Last Year Those participating in this years ensemble contest have definitely done themselves and Birdville's music program proud. One hundred ten (110) Division 1 "superior" ratings were awarded this year to 26 ensembles. How does that compare to last year's performance? Last year, Birdville brought home sixty (60) Division 1 superior ratings....WOW, one heck of an improvement. This improvement is definitely a testament to the hard work and dedication of our band students and the staff supporting these students. Congratulations to all that participated in this event....great job! Jazz Ensemble Finishes 2nd in Highlander Jazz Festival CONGRATULATIONS to the Birdville High School Jazz Ensemble for an outstanding performance at the Highlander Jazz Festival this past Saturday. Richland & Smithfield Middle Schools Join Birdville Band In Annual Cluster Concert Well, Mighty Hawk Band fans (and future Mighty Hawk Band members)....as it happens each year, the Birdville band took stage with both the Richland and Smithfield Middle School band yesterday evening (2/25) for the annual cluster concert. This concert brings together the Middle School bands from Birdville's two "feeder" schools, and provides them an opportunity to experience what it is like playing at the High School level. This is a great event and gives not only the students an opportunity to "live like a High School student" for the evening...but it also provides the parents of those students an idea of what they can expect to hear from their student in the coming years.
A huge thanks goes out to everyone that made this come together; the Directors at the schools as well as the participating students...and of course the parents. For a few more photographs of this event, see the photos and videos page. Calling all Seniors SSS = SUPERIOR SENIORS at the SYMPHONY

The competition is a tremendous fund raiser for the band. In order for us to be the "Host with the most" we will need both parent and student volunteers. The scheduled times for the shifts are: 6 am - 11:30 am, 11 am - 5 pm, 4:30 pm - 11 pm.
Volunteers are still needed for the Percussion \ Winter Guard Competition next Saturday, February 20, at the Thomas Coliseum. Tournament of Roses Parade - Update Meeting Parents...don't miss out on this important and informative meeting! Thursday, January 28th 7:00 PM at the BHS auditorium For an official invitation to the meeting, click here. Christmas Concert a HUGE Success On Tuesday the 15th of December...the Auditorium at Birdville High School was definitely the place to be! Those of us that were forunate enough to be there, were treated to some wonderful music from our phenomenal Mighty Hawk Band members...and of course our fantastic Directors and staff. All three concert bands played, as well as the jazz band...and a special performance by a flute ensemble. It would be hard to imagine a better concert anywhere in the metroplex; what a better way to get into the Christmas spirit!
Now video of at least one number posted for each of the performing bands! Check out the Photos & Video Page Seniors........ Congratulations on a great marching season; you will be missed next season!
Concert Band Tryouts Quickly Approaching Band members, this is a friendly reminder that in less than one month, the Directors will be holding tryouts for the 2010 concert season placements. Practice, practice, and then practice some more; and don't settle for the same placement you got last season! If you each push yourself just a little bit...there is no doubt you can move up a chair or even an entire band; so show yourself you can do it! BHS Fall Audition Information - Percussion Tournament of Champions - Results Congratulations to the Birdville Mighty Hawk Band for their performance at the Carrollton Tournament of Champions! Birdville took "Best In Class" for Division II and ranked 6th overall...quite an accomplishment for that little 4A Marching Band from North Richland Hills. We certainly look forward to more great things from this band during the 2009 marching season. If you would like to see some photographs from the competition, just click here. As defined by Dictionary.com.... Mighty Hawk Band Members....congratulations on a great Marching Season! You guys have definitely acted selflessly this season and have made each and every one of us that followed you from Carrollton to Arlington, to St. Louis and beyond...VERY - VERY PROUD! We thank you for providing us the greatest show on earth...that of yourselves.
How 'bout Them Hawks! Well, if you have been living in a cave and haven't yet heard...our Mighty Hawk Marching Band took tenth overall at the St. Louis Super Regional BoA competition. They didn't have a lot of time for anything other than practicing and playing (no time to see the arch)...but each and every band member gave 110% for this contest. This was a first for many of our band members; actually playing in a dome stadium has a different look, feel and sound than playing in the "open".
Congratulations go out to both the band members and staff. A huge thank you to all the volunteers that made this trip possible...as always, we couldn't do it without you. Way to go Hawks! The First Annual MARCH-a-THON Well....it was wet and it was chilly, but those students (and parents) that participated in the first annual March-a-Thon enjoyed some great music and a lot of laughs. I think we all know why the show this year is called "Immersion",because that is just about how everyone looked by the end of this March-a-Thon; like each person had been dunked into the ocean a time or two. Even with the rainy weather, a good time was still had by all! Don't miss the photographs on the Photos page! Here are a few to whet your appetite:
Map of the March-a-Thon Route (Tentative at this point) It's About That Time; Region Information and Tryouts Coming To An Auditorium Near You! Mighty Hawk Band members and parents...now that marching season is officially over, we switch gears to concert season and our Regional tryouts. We would love to see more of our band members progress through Region, Area, and ultimately State. In order to accomplish this task, we must all work a little harder in our spare time. As Ms. Wine said during the latest parent meeting; "If our band members would spend half as much tome practicing for the regional tryouts as they spend practicing for marching band...we would have a much better showing by Birdville than we ever have in the past." So what do you say guys....let's see if we can make our program STAND OUT from the rest! Below you will find information on the upcoming regional event: The Results Are In Our Mighty Hawk Marching Band received Division I ratings for their performance at the Regional UIL competition held Tuesday evening, October 20th. A Division I rating is the highest rating that can be given by the judging panel / staff at a UIL event. By receiving this rating, our Mighty Hawk Band will move on to the local Area UIL competition. Go Hawks; we are proud of you! Many Thanks A huge "thank you" goes out to all the wonderful and hard working volunteers working the Birdville Marching Contest! Without each of you, this event would not have been possible. Although we would love to personally thank each and every one of you in person...logistically it just isn't possible; just know we are truly grateful for the effort you put forth to make this a Fun and Successful competition. (Click on the graphic above to go to the official BISD Marching Festival Site) Don't Forget Make sure you check out the Band News "tab"...as it will contain both current and past Band News letters. If your student has not yet done so...please ensure these forms are completed and returned to the Directors as soon as possible. These forms are to ensure you and your student understand the UIL rules to which we must adhere...and more importantly, to ensure the Directors and Volunteers have your student's emergency medical information at their fingertips, should anything happen during a rehearsal, performance, trip, etc. You can find each of these forms available for download on either the "Links/Forms" page of this website or on the "Charms" website. Middle School Clinic / Concert The Birdville Symphonic Band hosted both the Richland and Smithfield Middle School bands this past week. During this event, each Middle School got the opportunity to play their competition music with the High School Band. Those in the audience were treated to some wonderful music and those playing were treated to new friendships and another opportunity to learn. BHS Winterguard Takes First The Birdville High School Winterguard walked away with a first place trophy this past Friday night. Twenty-eight schools took part in the competition, hosted by Centennial High School in Frisco. These dedicated girls not only took top honors, but were also promoted to the next class of competition. They have been practicing their show, "Lucky Penny," since the end of marching season in November. The Winterguard has two more competitions before the State Championships at the end of March. BHS Percussion Concert The percussion concert this year was a huge success! According to Mr. Taylor Belt's calculation...there were more than 400 in attendance. Well, that might have been a bit of a stretch, but those in attendance were treated to everything from Chopin to an original piece by BHS' own Mr. Cheripka, performed in black light. There was definitely something for everyone. Our percussionists were joined by guest clinician, Dr. Scott Harris from Stephen F. Austin State University. Dr. Harris played a snare drum solo and was also highlighted while playing with one of the percussion ensembles. Bottom line....a great time was had by all. Birdville Marching Festival Thank you to the Mighty Hawk Band, BUBB parents, and former band students who volunteered yesterday at the Birdville Marching Festival. Thanks to your hard work and dedication to our music program, the festival was a great success. Brad White said that this was the most problem-free festival that he could remember. I received many positive comments on the people in gold. I was especially grateful for those of you who stepped up and filled in for Haltom and Richland parents so that they could watch their bands. It was not easy, but you made it look easy. Thanks also to the directors and band for a great program. You brought great praise for yourselves and your school. Ralph Houy BUBB – President Congratulations Mighty Hawk Marching Band!

We would also like to give thanks to those that purchased the auction items and the tickets to the breakfast...as this is ultimately how we help out our Mighty Hawk Band. With all the changes that have taken place this summer, there are bound to be plenty of questions our parents have for our new Head Band Director. This is a wonderful opportunity to find out what is in store for the 2008 / 2009 band season. Therefore, in an effort to improve the communication throughout our organization, Ms. Wine would like to hold a general parent meeting the evening of August 5th at 7:00 in the band hall. Everyone is encouraged to come out to hear what Ms. Wine has to say...so don't miss this opportunity. New Addition to the Mighty Hawk Band We are excited to announce the addition of Mike Cheripka to the Birdville Band Director team. Mr. Cheripka comes to us from the Houston area where he was the assistant director of bands at Waller High School. While at Waller High School, Mr. Cheripka served as not only the Visual Caption Head of the marching band, leading them to three consecutive sweepstakes awards and the 2007 Texas State Marching Contest, but was also the conductor of both the Symphonic Band, and the award winning Waller High School Jazz Ensemble. Under his direction, the 2007 Jazz Ensemble placed 5th in the Yamaha / Music and Arts Nationwide "Spring Swing" Jazz Festival. He was also one of the founding directors and music arranger of the Waller High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble. Mr. Cheripka plays trumpet and percussion and is looking forward to summer band. You can check out his complete bio on the director page. New Head Band Director Selected The rumors have been flying faster than a Nolan Ryan fastball and most of us have been waiting with much anticipation and trepidation to find out who will be the next Head Band Director of our Mighty Hawk Band. Well, fellow Hawk Band Members...it is now official and we no longer have to rely on the rumor mill or rummage through Mr. Brad White's trash to find the answer to our question..."who is going to be our new Head Band Director." The BISD School Board met on June 26th and approved the appointment of Ms. Jolette Wine as the new Head Band Director of our Band. Through some highly covert operations (actually searching the web) we were able to come up with some information on Ms. Wine's credentials and past successes....none more impressive than her assistance with the L.D. Bell High School Marching Band this past year, as they took home the highest honor in Bands of America, winning the title as Grand National Champions. Jolette Mitchell Wine began playing the flute at Central Junior High in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford I.S.D. under the direction of Mr. Norman White. She then attended L.D. Bell High School with Mr. Roger Winslow as her band director. Following her high school years, Ms. Wine attended West Texas A&M University where she studied flute with Dr. Gary Garner and began her studies in music education. She received a Bachelor of Music Education at the University of Texas at Arlington and a Master of Music in flute performance from the University of North Texas where she studied flute with Dr. Mary Karen Clardy. Ms. Wine began her band directing tenure in the Lewisville I.S.D. at Hedrick Middle School where she taught for 4 years. She then went to teach in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford I.S.D. at Euless Jr. High where she taught for 6 years. Ms. Wine has been teaching in the Grapevine - Colleyville I.S.D. for the past 15 years. She began teaching at Colleyville Middle School in 1990 and in 1994 the Colleyville Middle School Band was named as the CC State Honor Band of Texas. In 1995, she was named "Teacher of the Year" for Colleyville Middle School. In the fall of 1996, Ms. Wine opened the new middle school in the Grapevine-Colleyville I.S.D. and moved from Colleyville Middle School to Cross Timbers Middle School. The 2001-02 Honors Band was named 2nd runner up in the CC state middle school contest. In 2004, Ms, Wine was named "Teacher of the Year" for Cross Timbers Middle School. Message from Mr. Heuer Dear Students and Parents I wanted to take this opportunity to inform you all that I will not be returning to Birdville High School this fall. I have accepted a job across the metroplex at Wylie High School. It is a large program in a growing area that is just starting to really take off, and being a new place for me, I know I will learn much. My decision to make the move was not an easy one, and I will miss all of you very much. I learned from all of you these past nine years, and I feel confident that the Birdville Band is set up for future successes. I will remain in my current home for at least the first year at my new school, so I will be close enough to keep an eye on your progress. I look forward to seeing you perform your great show and seeing you in the new uniforms that have been planned for you. You will love them both! It is never ideal to relay news like this in a letter alone without getting to see all of you face to face, so I have included my email if anyone would like to speak one on one. Good luck Mighty Hawk Band! Sincerely, Paul Heuer Attention Percussionists Due to unforeseen construction that has left the electricity off in the building, the Tuesday summer sectionals have been postponed until July 8th. Please check the website for future updates on this subject. - Mr. Phipps |
