August Camp Survival Tips

Student Drop Off and Pick-Up – Please remember to drop off and pick up your kiddos at the front entrance to BHS (off of Mid Cities Blvd). For traffic safety please do not drive them to the practice field or pick them up at the practice field. Upperclassmen that are driving to rehearsal, please remember that you must park in the student parking lot (not horseshoe parking lot).

Health / Heat Safety – Everyone loves summer, but without precaution, our rigorous activities, the sunshine, and heat can get the best of us. We won’t be outside for the entirety of our rehearsal days, but enough to impact your health if you’re not prepared. Failure to hydrate and eat/drink enough will impact your health negatively, often resulting in exhaustion, headache, and nausea. Avoiding heavy greasy foods, milk or dairy products.

Drink more than you usually do and drink primarily water. Water should be the vast majority of your liquid intake during August Camp, and not just during rehearsal times but around the clock, weekends included. Juices and Gatorade / Powerade are fine but are not substitutes for actual water. Avoid caffeinated, sugary, and energy drinks like tea, soda, Red Bull, etc. Be sure to bring a one gallon supply of iced water to all rehearsals and fill up your container during your lunch break.

Other ways to beat the heat- Wear light colors or white t-shirts and loose fitting clothing. Moisture-wicking garments are optimal. Wear comfortable athletic shoes and moisture-reducing socks. The cooler & drier your feet, the cooler and more comfortable you’ll be. Remember, flip flops and sandals will not work since we will be running and working out. Wear a hat and sunglasses to keep the sun out of your eyes and off of your cheeks, nose, and ears. Apply / re-apply sunscreen prior to outdoors rehearsal blocks.

Lunch - Our daily lunch break is from 10:30am-1:00pm. Students may leave campus for lunch or bring a sack lunch. Remember, lunch is not provided, but please make good eating and drinking choices.

Volunteer Meeting - Come join us on Monday, August 9th at 7:45 in the band hall for a meet-and-greet and to find out how you can become involved with the Mighty Hawk Band. Committee leads will talk about what volunteering for their committee entails and there will be time for Q and A. Remember - parental involvement/support is crucial for the success of the band. Here is a bonus: At the end of the meeting we will all make our way to the practice field to watch the end of rehearsal. Don't miss out! Please contact Kathleen Cantrell 817-247-6414 or kkcantrell@msn.com with any questions.

Still in need of Logistics Volunteers – The Logistics Team is still in need of more folks to help with this year’s band program. We have openings in all Areas that need to be filled(Prop Builders, Prop and Equipment Movers for Games and Contests, and Box Truck / CDL Drivers to Drive the Mighty Hawk Band Semi).
